The golden rule – adapted

Yesterday, in the United States, the current administration dropped its policy to bar international students from residing in the US if their respective college/university only provided online learning (due to the COVID pandemic).

Institutions, like Harvard and MIT, were prepared to fight the policy in court, stating: “The effect — and perhaps even the goal [of the policy] — is to create as much chaos for universities and international students as possible.” (From the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court)

Beyond the chaos, several blogs and articles on the topic shared that international students felt “unwelcome” and like they didn’t “belong.”

Belonging is essential to a meaningful life. (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs)

With that, I’ve been ruminating on the golden rule:

“Treat others as you would want to be treated.”

And the adapted golden rule:

“Treat others as they would want to be treated.”

What opens up for you with this simple reframe?

Dedicated to you,

Alicia
